The Read Aloud Handbook Giveaway

The Read-Aloud Handbook: Sixth Edition

I am thrilled to announce that I am giving away a brand new copy of The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease! I consider this book to be essential reading for anyone who cares about the education and learning of children, especially parents, grandparents, and teachers.  This book should be standard equipment in every home library. Really.

The first four chapters of this book introduce the reading aloud concept and explain why you should read aloud, when you should start (hint: at birth!), when you should end (age = never), the ages and stages of read aloud, and read aloud do's and don'ts. It will really open your eyes to how crucial it is to read aloud to your children (no matter how old they are) and give you all the best tips to do it right!

Chapters 4-9 focus more on the best practices to promote literacy in the home and at school, encourage silent sustained reading, and lure children away from the TV.

I love that Jim Trelease emphasizes the importance of allowing children to read what they love, even if it is comic books or magazines! If people (yes, children are people too) are allowed to read what they enjoy, their reading skills will improve. We like to do what we enjoy, not what we are forced to do.

This book is particularly helpful in presenting ways to encourage reading among boys. If you have a struggling reader You Need This Book!

The last 100+ pages of this book contains lists of suggested read alouds including: wordless books, predictable books, reference books, picture books, short novels, full-length novels, poetry, anthologies, and fairy tales and folktales. It is a literary treasure trove!

  1. Thanks for the giveaway! I just returned this book to the library, but I really want to own it.

I read aloud to my boys during breakfast and at bedtime, and whenever else they'll let me.
